The Stonewall Riots- lesser known history behind Pride month

Pride Month is a month dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQIA+ communities all around the world. It is about standing united and coming together to celebrate and accept love of all kinds while reminiscing on their path-breaking progress towards gaining rights and how far they have come over the years.

"THE WORLD IS ABOUT TELLING STORIES, I TELL MINE THROUGH FASHION."

in conversation with Mr. Sonam Dubal

What exactly attracts us to that one piece of clothing? An article of clothing on the body may seem effortless, but it helps define that person's character. And if the person happens to be...

Reflection - Generation Gap

By — Gayatri Batra | X-Sariska

Let’s look at the exact definition of this word; it refers to thedifference of attitudes between people of different generations, often leading to a lack of understanding. This term is often used by parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts (especially aunts) in matters of convenience to win arguments or to prove a point...

Small talk

Gayatri Batra | Class VIII, Corbett

Amoonless night on the road to Shimla. We are driving to Mashobra to visit my grandmother who I must say is not expecting us. Father always does things spontaneously. I roll down my windows and feel the cold gusts of wind against my face. We are the only ones on the road.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

A skit by Gayatri Batra | Class V, Sariska

Backdrop: A hot and humid day in July

Dad: I hope everyone is ready to go. I don't know about you guys , I am really excited. This is the first time I am traveling beyond Rohtang Pass to Ladhak.

Artworks

Name - Pandemic migration

Medium - Mixed media. Charcoal on newsprint
Size – A2 sheet (42 x 59.5 cm)

Lamba safar, paon pe chale. Even as we were securely locked inside our homes at the peak of the pandemic, the world outside was on the move. We read and saw the journeys that thousands of people were making on foot to reach their homes in the rural hinterlands. Here was another layer of uncertainty, would they be able to reach? How would their journeys change them, and change us? I wanted to tell their story of hardship and uncertainty but above all, courage, even though it was triggered by helplessness.

Name - Abstract artwork

Medium - Poster colour
Size- A3 sheet (29.7x42 cm)

This abstract work was made using a slab of glass (for the circular spirals) and one single brush. Splash effect and overlapping of colours has also been used.

Name- Afi

Medium- Water colour on paper
Size- A4 sheet (21x29.7cm)

The task was to come up with an ideal restaurant theme along with a suitable logo. My very own aunt inspired me. Being visually challenged, it is very difficult for her to find braille menus, or to have menus that have larger fonts in restaurants. In Greek, afi translates to – ‘feel’. It struck me to come up with a restaurant that truly makes you feel and connect with the food along with being blind friendly. The logo is simple yet symbolic. I have used Athena- the greek goddess of love and acceptance. She has been embossed-to give a tactile effect as well as symbolise braille. The flowers and the bees make you feel one with nature and highlight the importance of touch and sensitivity. The wild flowers have been painted using water colours and the bee has been sketched in pen medium.

Name- Along came a spider

Medium- Pencil medium
Size-A5 sheet (14.81 x 21.01)

Fear- an unpleasant feeling triggered by the perception of danger, real or imagined.

I have attempted to use hyperrealism. The pencils shades I have used are 4b.6b and 8b(for more depth).

Name- Boot sketch

Medium- Pencil medium
Size- A3 sheet (29.7x42cm)

Name- Dali Calligram

Medium- Pen (ink on paper)
Size- A3 sheet (29.7x42cms)

Dali’s art pieces have always been intriguing, somewhat beguiling. His art-pieces reflect humour with a dark twist. He paints the most odd objects in one common frame with zero connections, yet produced masterpieces. Dali, being of most respected artist’s, was the subject of my calligram. I have used black pen medium with lettering. The words used in the calligramcomprise of his name as well as synonyms, I feel, describe him best.

Name- Footprint film festival poster

Medium- Digital art (canva) + pen medium
Dimensions- 417x553

The footprint film festival poster was made using both digital and hand-on art. The assignment was to create a poster for their annual film festival using any digital medium. I felt combing both digital and manual art would be unique and interesting I had sketched the moon using a black Staedtler pen. I have sketched the moon by hand and it was inspired by the dream works logo; I felt it would compliment the theme of the poster being a film festival one. I also added tiny footprints (symbolising footprint film festival) as well as a girl sitting on the edge of the moon with a camera. The background is the same paper I had used to sketh the moon, and I crinkled it to add tactile imagery.

Name- Identi- tea

Medium- Pencil on paper with coffee borders
Size- A4 sheet (21 x 29.7cm)

This artwork has been inspired from a moment, a moment I prefer spending alone, a brief yet necessary interaction between Darjeeling tea and I. Whether its brooding over a web of thoughts or simply enjoying the silence, this period is a time of self-reflection. It resonates with who I am and hence is a crucial part of my identity. The artwork is symbolic, the borders have been made using ground coffee and water which lays emphasis on my telegu heritage. The flowers on the coffee borders are pen medium. The main subject of the art piece is the tea set; being the same set I have been using since I was about 8. I aimed to portray sentiment. The entire set has been sketched using shading pencils (8b,6b,5b and 4b). The sketch has been done on an A4 sheet.

Name- Mask and fruit bowl still life

Medium- Soft pastels
Size- A2 sheet (59.4x42cm)

Name- Solace

Medium- Pen on paper
Size- A5 sheet (14.85 x 210cm)

“The touch may be temporary, its imprint lasts forever.”

The word ‘comfort’ seems to be the essence of solace. Your first cup of steaming coffee in the morning, the voice of rain crashing against your roof, the crisp smell of eucalyptus oil, in my case. This word, which holds unique to so many-I look at my grandfather plucking jackfruit pods with great enthusiasm. It’s the little things that bring him joy. This sketch may be a simple black and white sketch with three hands, yet it aims to portray a range of emotions. The two hands on the extreme right are his, whereas the one hand on the extreme left and smaller in size is mine. Our hands briefly provide ...

Name- The Burden

Medium- Pen on paper
Size- A4 sheet (21x29.7cm)

The following artwork has been made using pen medium. This art-piece is inspired by the pandemic and the “burden” of it all. No better than Atlas, the Greek god I felt would be the perfect symbol to represent humanity dealing with the pandemic at large. He bears the Earth on his shoulders. Except here on his shoulders instead of sketching Earth, I made the corona virus itself, representing the world facing the gruesome complications and havoc the virus has wreaked. The typography next to the sketch has been written in Greek and translates to “the burden”. I have used various hatching and cross hatching techniques on the body of Atlas, to create further depth. On the virus ball, there are hints of red to add realism. Stippling effect has again been used for shading and depth.

THE GREAT WAVE OFF KANAGAWA

Concept Note:
The great wave of Kanagawa is a painting known by all. Its simplicity is its highlight and it provides us with a sense of tranquillity. Our students came up with an interesting twist of this masterpiece; using plastics.

We have used plastic in our project on the froth of the waves for a textural effect and to create a highlight on plastic’s hazardous nature. We may have heard all about it, but do we truly ever emphasise on its magnitude? Plastics choke the vast oceans and the several lives embedded within them. They maim the creatures that we once called beautiful.

The micro plastics we were so eager to get rid of, like a deceitful friend, find their way back to us through the fish we consume.100 million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone. 300 million tons of plastic is produced globally every year. Half of that plastic is used for disposable items that will only be used once, as a result, more than 8 million tons of discarded plastic ends up in our oceans every single year. Plastic management still tends to be a burning global issue ignored by many. The oceans stay suffering in silence. We give them a voice.
